Ten kittens, about a week old, were found abandoned in a tied-up yellow grocery bag by a Good Samaritan who was walking down Oakwood Ave. near Vaughan Rd. in Toronto Canada yesterday around 4 p.m. Jonathan Breedon, 23, followed the sound of a whimpering cat to a grocery bag lying on a pile of wood behind 201 Cedric Ave. "As soon as I saw the bag, a baby cat came out and started crying," Breedon said. "So I opened the bag and I saw a whole bunch of other cats in there." "They were newborn. Their eyes were still closed." Breedon said he brought the kittens to his nearby home and washed them down in the bathtub. Many still had umbilical cords.

"Unfortunately, we have been seeing a lot more cruelty lately than we care to see," said Shannon Laukhuf, executive director for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester. "But I've never seen anything like this, though, when four kittens were blatantly set on fire."
Laukhuf said the domestic short-hair kittens, only about 2 weeks old, are alive and being nursed at the SPCA's headquarters in Briarcliff Manor.
