An Overview Of Natural Horsemanship Training Techniques

Bookmark and Share
By Lena Cervantes

Often referred to as horse whispering, natural horsemanship training is the art of schooling a horse working on psychological factors to communicate your wishes rather than force. It is the knack of getting your horse to want to please you out of respect rather than fear. In order to achieve this you need to gain his respect and trust as a leader who he can look up to for guidance and protection. Once you have established yourself as the herd leader, he will dutifully obey your commands out of trust not fear, as he is instinctively a herd animal, and believes that you, as the leader of the herd, are there to protect him from danger.

You need to develop a true understanding of what makes your equine friend tick if you want to enhance the level of communication between you. You must be able to read his body language to detect the signs indicating stress or contentment so that you can address problem areas in his schooling, without any form of negativity. Once a deeper level of trust has be established between you and your horse, he will obediently follow you command as a respected leader.

The underlying principle on which natural horsemanship schooling is based, is that the horse must know his rank in the herd and respect your space at all times. He must only approach when invited, and must move off when requested to do so, and must never stand his ground. The basic lessons of yielding and ground manners teach a horse this cardinal rule in the game. These principles are reinforced by using pressure and release techniques, where he is rewarded for yielding to your command by you releasing the adverse pressure being applied to him to gather a response,

The methods used in natural horsemanship training to form a perfect partnership between horse and master, offer an alternative to conventional horse schooling techniques. Owing to the radical shift in attitude it brings about in most horses, and its effectiveness with problem horses, it is a movement that is rapidly gathering a lot of support.

The importance of ground work is heavily stressed in the natural way of schooling. Trust and obedience are earned whilst playing several games together. And as both horse and master find these exercises enjoyable, you are both growing and are drawn closer to develop a special bond.

The tools and aids required for schooling a horse using these techniques are a little different from conventional training aids, but they are very simple. All that is required is a knotted rope halter, necessary to apply pressure to pressure points on the horses head during training, plus a 12 foot lead rope that can be attached to the rope halter. A carrot stick with an optional savvy string attached is a useful training aid for giving commands, and also for gently stroking the horse during bonding.

This method of schooling is particularly useful for a horse that has proven to be a challenge using conventional horse training techniques. If you are frustrated working with a problem horse, then perhaps you should investigate these methods a little closer. You may be amazed at the transformation in both outlook and character that it will bring about in your horse.

Give Your Pet Rabbits The Best Names

Bookmark and Share
By Layla Arthur

Plenty of pet rabbit owners consider finding the right rabbit names for their rabbit pets a tough thing to do. Nonetheless, there are numerous sources on the best names that can be given to their pet rabbits.

It is a suggestion that you name your pets after the best characters in your most-like books. Additionally, many propose that you name your pets after the normal human names like Edward, Isabella, Jacob, and Alice. Other suggestions include naming your pet rabbits after the most well-known cities in the world such as Geneva and Sidney as well as the world's greatest musicians like Pavarotti.

You may want to take into consideration other suggested points in choosing for the right rabbit names for you long-eared friends even though the above-mentioned suggestion sound really fantastic. Think of a name that is not difficult to be recognized by your pet rabbits, thus, make it two-syllable names only.

Obviously, it is entertaining and effortless to have rabbit names that have "ie" or "y" endings and these names for the most part are nothing but easy to call. Some of the names that have "ie" or "y" endings are Barney, Lily, Franky, and Fluffy.

It is advisable that you pick the rabbit's name that will not put you to humiliation when you utter it. An example for this would be: using the name "Joey" is way better to be used as opposed to "Jack the Ripper," despite the fact that the latter depicts the real nature of a rabbit that intends to rip-off all of the things that can be found inside your house. It is best that you baptize your rabbits that will make you and your pet comfortable as this can be really personal.

It is best that you stay away from using names that may sound like imperative words such as the name Joe. This name could be misunderstood by your pets as it sounds like the word "No." In this case, your rabbit will be confused.

It is not at all a prerequisite that you immediately give your pets names the moment you brought them home. It is best that you keep under observation, for the first few weeks, their character ad behavior. You can just call your rabbit "Happy," if he is always fond, while you can just call your rabbit "Grumpy" if he is always bad-tempered - well we are not certain if you will do the latter. Pet rabbit owners give their pets names such as "Spotty", "Brownie" and "Fluffy" for these match the characters of their pets.

Over-thinking in coming up with names for your rabbit pets is not advisable at all. All you have to do is formulate names that could make your life uncomplicated in uttering it.

Calling them by their names constantly is what you ought to do the moment you have formulated names for them. Praise them and give them rewards each time as if they respond to their names.

A Barf Diet For Our Dog

Bookmark and Share
By Jake Smithey

It finally happened: I got to the bottom of the bag of hypoallergenic food for the dog and it was too late to get to the pet store for more. This led me to make a BARF supply for our dog that would last a week from the food stuff just sitting in the kitchen and refrigerator. When I was finished mixing, I wrapped in plastic packs 3 patties of about 1/2 pound each--enough for one pack of three per day frozen for an entire week. It took me 40 minutes or so to mix it and wrap it. I was pretty pleased with myself.

I was a little unsure of giving my dog just three patties a day. My dog is big. It didn't seem like enough food. My hubby started referring to them disdainfully as "Doggie Snacks."

While I was doubtful about what I was doing, I began to see the dog becoming incredibly alive. Short of one week, he appeared to be like a puppy--full of playful, feisty energy. The most amazing thing, however, was he stopped his annoying whining around the house. Completely stopped it. That was unbelievable.

I read all kinds of blogs (including an article or two on my own blogs) that said whining would stop if a dog got all the healthy food stuffs it needs, but I didn't really believe it. Our dog is relentless.

Lest you misunderstand me here...I adore the dog. Sadly he is a miserable pet. I have to say it.

We are now living with a puppy again and he is getting a grey beard already. Now he is on his second week of BARF and he is still a changed dog. He is standing here right this second wagging his tail, begging me to play with him. Amazing.

I am impressed. I am truly impressed. If you have a dog that seems to have lost his yippee skippee self, you might give a BARF Diet a try. It has brought Frank back from retirement.

Keep your eyes here. Our dog is our test kitchen dog. Hypoallergenic Dog Food is his game.

Broccoli -A Healthy Food for Dogs

Bookmark and Share
By Jerry Welsh

People know about the healthful benefits that can be gained from eating vegetables. Dog owners wanting to ensure optimum health of the pet would include vegetables in the dogs diet. Dogs are not hard to feed because these animals are happy eaters. Vegetables would enhance the taste of the dog's dry foods. Commercially prepared pet foods even the ones advertised to be of premium quality would not have all the nutrients needed by the dog.

Broccoli is a highly nutritious vegetable but it contains a substance that is dangerous to dogs. This vegetable has isothiocyanate, a substance that can cause severe gastric irritation. The toxicity of broccoli would depend on the amount consumed. This highly nutritious veggie would be perfectly safe for the dog to eat as long as the amount consumed does not exceed 10% of the dog's total food intake for the day. Stomach upset that will cause the dog severe pain will occur if broccoli is more than 10% of the dog's diet. If daily intake exceeds 25% of the dog's diet, the isothiocyante would have fatal effects on the dog.

Broccoli is considered as one of the most nutritious vegetables. Broccoli is an excellent source of vitamin A and C. Vitamin C promotes the absorption of protein thus dogs that consume this vegetable can fully get the protein from their foods. This veggie also contains high levels of folic acid and calcium. Dogs will always be exposed to potentially harmful substances from the food and also from the environment. Broccoli has high levels of antioxidant that aid in the repair of the damage to the cells caused by toxic substances.

The sulforaphane substance this vegetable contains aids in the detoxification process. The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying components of broccoli aid in the efficient removal of free radicals thus lowering the occurrence of cancer and other health problems. The Broccoli has the all important phytochemical that helps in fighting cancer thus the development of this dreaded disease is greatly reduced. This dark green vegetable is a significant source of soluble fiber thus regular ingestion would promote the intestinal and bladder health of the dog.

Obesity is a common concerns of dogs given that owners cannot resist when the dog asks for another serving. The owner can give the pet all the vegetables it can consume without fearing that the pet will get obese. Broccoli is non-fattening but the dog owner has to ensure that the ration received by pet would not result to life threatening situations.

How Do I Get my Pet to Stop Behaving Badly?

By Zhanghui Zhenlihoa

Sometimes the best way for you to keep your dog from behaving badly is to enroll it in dog school, or an obedience training class. However, this choice is best reserved as a last ditch effort to get your pet to behave properly again. Don't try and be lazy because you can't invest time to properly correct its bad behavior on your own.

Preventing or having them stop biting is good way is a good way to stop bad behavior in dogs. Dogs bite because they're teething, they feel threatened, they're injured, they've been abused or, sometimes, if the dog is in heat. Provide dogs plenty of chew toys. If a puppy nips or bites, use a can or bottle filled with coins or rocks as a shaker, and shake it at them while saying "no" firmly. The shake will startle them. Dogs that are injured should be muzzled until they've healed to prevent biting.

Dogs like digging in a trash. Bad behavior in dogs manifest because they're either hungry or are overcome by plain curiosity to investigate the strong. To remedy this, try spraying bitter apple on the trash bin to keep it away and try getting rid of your trash so as to keep it from being accessed by your dog.

Misbehaving dogs sometimes eat feces because of maybe you haven't fed it enough or it simply needs to quench its curiosity of the unknown. To stop your dog from eating its feces, you can purchase special dog chow to make feces taste horrible to a dog's standards.

To raise a well behaved dog, there's always an option of enrolling it obedience class as soon as possible. This option is best used if everything else has failed. It will help straighten out your pet's common problems without you trying to work a sweat over it that much.

How To Keep Your Sofa Pet Free

You will find some habits every single puppy lover wants to teach their puppy. Things like house training and walking with a leash are behaviors all puppies are required to learn. But then you'll find what could possibly be called the "owner optional" habits. One such example is no matter if or not you might let your puppy on your furniture. Some puppy owners love it and even encourage their furry companions to jump up on the sofa for some cuddle time. But for other people, a dog lying on furniture intended for human beings is intolerable. The armchair may be too expensive, the puppy might be of a breed that tends to shed, or the owner might just think it's poor manners, specially when the puppy leaps on the lap of guests. So how do you convince your pup not to make himself comfortable on what appears to be the softest spot of the home?

The existing thinking about training your puppy is to reward him when he does the task appropriately rather than punish him when he messes up. Whenever you spot your dog on your favorite couch or chair, it is possible to develop an immediate incentive by holding out a dog treat far away enough that he has to leave the couch to get it. When his four feet are on the floor, make a sound cue like snapping your fingers or clicking your tongue or depressing a mechanical clicker and immediately feed him the treat. Soon the puppy will figure out what action gets him a click and that the click means a treat.

The present thinking about training your puppy is to reward him when he does the job right as opposed to punish him when he messes up. When his four feet are on the floor, make a sound cue like snapping your fingers or clicking your tongue or depressing a mechanical clicker and right away feed him the treat. Attempt spraying the furniture with smells you don't mind but your puppy will, like a strongly scented lemon air freshener. You may even hide near the vicinity of the furniture and as soon as your puppy lands on the sofa and blast a fog horn. Anything that's humane but gets his attention is acceptable.

And make certain there is a kennel or bed or just a blanket nearby where your puppy can lie down. You want him to really feel that your residence is his home, just not every single corner of it.

When human beings speak about 'being inside the dog home,' it's a place they incredibly much do not need to be. But for your puppy, an outside enclosure just for him is really a little bit of heaven. Regardless of whether the dog home you give him is often a homemade family project or a state of the art pre-fabricated puppy palace, two rules should usually apply.

Initial, your puppy's doghouse need to itself be in a larger area of your yard, surrounded by fencing huge and powerful enough to stand up to your puppy's energy and curiosity. The dog home can supplement that enclosed space, however it should not substitute for it. Second, don't make the doghouse your puppy's permanent residence. Even the heftiest and furriest dogs ought to be inside your house in the worst weather. Smaller breeds must be kept in the home all winter long, and the smallest of all should only use the dog house as a unique playroom area for specific periods of time, and not as a home away from home.

Regardless of whether you construct your puppy's dream house from scratch or bring it residence fully constructed, all doghouses really should have some features in common. A roof with out leaks that slopes to ensure that rainwater and melting snow doesn't collect on it can be a must. There must be some sort of opening at the far end to ensure that there is additional than one exit for your puppy. To cut down on drafts the threshold of the door ought to not be at ground level but raised somewhat above that.

Lastly you shouldinside your yard that elevates it above the surrounding terrain. This may stop rain water from gathering in or about the dog home and in general keep it from getting damp. For comparable factors, the dog home should be next to something huge enough to protect it from the direct onslaught of strong winds. That means anything from trees to the side of your own home.

Flooring supplies like straw or wood shavings can insulate your dog from the cold ground. Water resistance is also a property to watch for - used blankets or even the material from discarded winter jackets are excellent for that. And your puppy's dream home need to fit him snuggly. Ensure it is just massive enough to accommodate him and his food and water bowls and perhaps a toy or two. These things are all a puppy requirements to feel secure and pleased and properly cared for by probably the most important human being in his life: you!

Dog Potty Training Is A Must For All Dogs

It is always fun to have a puppy at home but this is also a responsibility for the owner for its lifetime. Some basic obedience training is very important for dogs especially when they are a part of the family. You should always try and start his training as early as possible to prevent any kind of bad habits which may be picked by him. It gets tough to break a dog's habit once it is formed. Training older dogs is a bit tough as compared to puppies because of this reason.

Dog potty training is very important part of the overall obedience training. A dog should be training for potty as early as possible. If you have a very young puppy, it becomes really hard to keep a track of his schedules. He will not have any control over his bowel movements. But as a puppy grows, he should know where to go for his potty and urination.

Housebreaking a dog may be tough for most people but all it takes is some knowledge about dog instincts. As a young puppy, his potty schedules will not be clear. At this time you have to be really careful about their timing especially when they wake up from sleep or even after their meals.

Dog potty training is nothing but making an effective communication. Your dog should know about the behavior and reactions that are expected of him in certain situations. When you repeat it again and again, it forms a routine and a habit. Dogs can easily make habits out of their daily routines so you have to keep a check on these routines.

Dog training depends on some factors like the breed of the dog, age and also the sex of the dog to some extent. Some breeds are much more stubborn so you need to have more patience when dealing with them. Whereas some pick up things really well. Same way, training younger dogs is much more easy than training older ones.

Save the Dog from Death - Know the Signs of Food Poisoning

Bookmark and Share
By Jerry Welsh

Food poisoning has caused a hundreds of dogs to die every year. We know how dogs love to roam. Dogs are as well noted for their scenting abilities. Dogs not only have voracious appetites, they are also known to be indiscriminate eaters. The smell of rotting food in trash bins and garbage heaps would be too tempting for a dog to resist. Hence, food poisoning is one of the common health concerns of dogs.

Food poisoning commonly occur because of the dog's voracious appetite but this health concern can be due to other reasons as well. A loving dog owner may not be aware that the dog is being poisoned by the commercial food. High quality commercial dog food can get contaminated too. The owner may be unaware that every scoop of the contaminated commercial dog food is killing the dog slowly.

Food poisoning, just like any other health issues can be prevented from causing the dog serious harm if detected early. For the safety of the pet, it is vital for a dog owner to know the signs of food poisoning. A poisoned dog though would know how to remove the toxins from its system. Dogs that have swallowed substances not accepted by the stomach would induce vomiting by eating grass. However, the dog's self doctoring may be ineffective in removing the toxins.

Dogs that are allowed to wander have all the opportunities to eat rotten food. A new diet can have the same effect too. Usually the first sign of food poisoning is vomiting. Diarrhea is another. Vomiting and diarrhea is the dog's system's way of removing the toxic substances. Excessive drooling and sluggishness are other signs of food poisoning. Inappetance is also another sign of food poisoning. A yellowish tint in the eyes and bright orange colored urine signify that the toxins remaining in the dogs body is already affecting its organs. Severe poisoning would have the dog passing blackened stool, vomit blood, have seizures and lose its motor abilities. Dogs would totally refuse food. If the poisoning is caused by the dog's commercial food, the condition will be worsened because dog owners would encourage the pet to eat by mixing the dog food with gravy or home cooked food.

Symptoms associated with food poisoning like vomiting and diarrhea can be corrected by fasting the dog for 24 for hours to give the stomach a chance to rest. Give the dog bland foods like boiled rice and chicken after the fasting period. But if the condition of the dog worsen, a vet's attention will be very necessary.

Why Do Puppies Growl

Bookmark and Share
By Wendon Lee

When a puppy growls, even human beings could be frightened. And that's exactly why some puppies do growl. They use it as a means of warning and an expression of aggression, an instinct left over from their wolf ancestors who growled to maintain away other hazardous creatures. Puppies do often engage in a sort of "playful" growling when involved in vigorous and competitive games, like pulling on one end of a blanket while you pull on the other. Although there is certainly commonly no mistaking it for the actual thing, even this sort of growling shouldn't be kept up for too long just before you quit to let your puppy calm down. In virtually all other cases, growling is often a habit you don't want your puppy to obtain into.

A typical motivation for your puppy's growling is an approaching stranger (human or canine) which prompts your puppy to let the intruder know he is entering your puppy's "turf." Yet another growl is intended to defend something of value to your puppy, like his food, if he is concerned that another creature wants to steal it.

(A dog that has just grow to be a new mother might growl to defend something genuinely valuable: her babies.) And as aggressive as a growl can sound, often it can be in fact an expression of fear of imminent physical danger on the component of the puppy. Normally speaking, the lower the growl, the a lot more most likely it's a warning that a bite is imminent, specifically if the growl is lengthy, the puppy's body is stiff, and he is seeking straight into the eyes of the individual or animal he is confronting.

The one typical aspect of all such non-playful growls is that none of them should be tolerated. As will be the case with a lot of puppy difficulties, punishment for growling won't work. What does work can be a sharp "No!" when you have already started utilizing this word as a command for him to stop whatever behavior he is engaging in that you simply don't like. When the growling ceases, a warm "Good Dog!" would then be suitable. If he seems to be growling as a result of a particular fear or concern, you may investigate it at that point, but only after you've gotten the growling to stop.

If the growling persists, you might think about a skilled trainer who has expertise dealing with what exactly is perhaps the most difficult puppy behavior to correct.

Guarding Your Puppies In Winter

Bookmark and Share
By Wendon Lee

Every single season has its joys for you and your puppy dog. But every time of year also has its dangers for the furry, four-footed set. Winter is specifically fraught with dog perils. Essentially the most obvious hazard of course is the cold temperatures. As an example, frostbite is as serious an concern for your dog as it can be for you. Puppies that invest most of their time indoors or that have been growing up in warmer temperatures must spend limited time in subfreezing temperatures, possibly no much more than length of a superb walk. Inside the house, make certain you dog stays warm, perhaps with additional bedding. For dogs that spend significantly time outside in a doghouse, warm bedding and insulation is even much more critical. When the thermometer definitely drops, even the hardiest dogs really should come inside.

Ironically, another danger to puppies in the wintertime are the things they do to maintain warm. That is why you must usually honk the horn of your car prior to you move it out of the garage or down the driveway. Puppies might be hiding underneath the auto, drawn there by its shielding from the elements as well as the warmth of the engine. The smallest breed of dogs may well even lie on the engine itself. The things you do to keep yourself warm can also endanger your puppy dog.

Space heaters, wooden stoves and radiators can all burn your puppy dog. And needless to say, the home fires that usually start inside the winter are a threat to your dog as much as your other loved ones. So do all of the issues you do to defend the rest of your family (like checking the batteries within your smoke detectors), and consist of your dog in any procedures or drills you may have for evacuating your household in an emergency. If the worst happens, a highly visible sign on a front window that alerts fire fighters to the truth that you have a puppy is really a excellent thought.

Candles are a cherished part of the winter experience. But with a pet inside the house, you might have to guard against candles becoming knocked over by running paws or a well wagged tail. Either keep them weighted down with a dome or get rid of them altogether. And of course by no means leave a room using the candle still lit, which is superior guidance for any home. Anti-freeze is often a winter essential. It can be also lethal for your puppy. Maintain it safely stored away and right away clean up any spills inside your garage or driveway. Carbon monoxide from a automobile warming up in the garage can endanger your dog if there isn't enough ventilation. (Carbon monoxide is also a danger from some hearing source sin the property if they're not in great condition, so check to create positive they are.)

And lastly, keep in mind that deicing crystals may also sicken your dog. So clean off his paws whenever you returns from exploring the winter wonderland.

Quickly Selling Horses For Sale

Bookmark and Share
By Lee Gilbert

When it comes to selling your horses for sale, you need to think of one thing, pretty sells. Be sure your horses are groomed, trained, and are fed properly before you sell. Another thing to think about before you sell a horse is where you are going to sell them. Remember to set yourself up for success.

Brush, clip and bath the horse you are selling before you show him to the buyer. This will make a good impression, and it will make him look good for any pictures. When you clip him, get his bridal path, whiskers, and under his chin. If he will take it, try to trim his long hair from his ears as well. Try not to go inside though, that hair is used to keep out bugs and protect his ears from the weather. Also brush the main and tail, there are supplies you can buy that will help keep it from getting tangled and dirty, like a tail bag. If it is a white horse, ask your local feed store for tricks to get any stains out of his white hair.

Before you sell your equine, be sure he is trained to the best of your ability. He needs to have good ground manners, and if he's ride able, try to tune him up the best you can. Make sure he can turn left, right and back up. Most buyers like to see a horse who can work off your legs and knows how to neck reign.

The weight of an equine can show a lot about how they were cared for and how important they are. A horse that shows ribs and hip bones is usually too skinny and needs to be fed more. A fat horse usually has fat lumps in his neck, and had undefined muscles. Both situations can cause unwanted health problems.

The next thing to do is find a place to sell your horse. Some common areas are a web page, on a bill board in your area, or at an auction house nearby. Make sure that the place you are selling your horse has a well known reputation for selling their horses at a fair price, and that their sell percentages are high. Also make sure you are selling your equine at the right place.

If you take your horse to an auction house, make sure you research the place before you enter your horse. They may be selling low sale horses, and if you plan on getting a couple thousand, you probably wont at a low selling auction house. If this is the case, look online to find a better auction house. Check out the reviews and what people have said about the place.

If you decide to sell on an online equine website, make sure you are posting your horse on the proper site. If you are selling a quarter horse, don't post him on a thoroughbred web page. Also make sure they have a high rate of sales on that page. If it is low, you may want to find a different web page. Another thing to look at is how many pictures you can post, and if you are contacting straight to the buyer or going through the website. Don't forget your local billboards. If you sell him in town, you may get to visit your old friend and see how he is doing.

Make sure your equine looks good, has good manners, and is in fit shape before you sell him. Be sure you research the places you want to sell your horse before you sell him. This is your best friend, you want him to go to a good home.

Concise Information About Spanish Mustangs

Bookmark and Share
By Fabio Garcia

Spanish Mustangs are one of the few horses which were part of history. They are commonly known as the colonial Spanish horse and descended from the horses that had been introduced from Spain during the initial conquest of North and South America. They are almost extinct in Spain today. The Spanish Mustangs have been thoroughly domesticated today and are often confused with the American Mustang.

The American Mustang is a descendant of feral horses and Spanish horses. The feral horses are the ones that had escaped from several areas and run wild in the protected habitats in the western parts of the USA. By the late 1800s the Morgans introduced thoroughbreds and the Arabians into America.

The Spanish Mustangs are the descendants of various horse breeds that came from the Iberian Peninsula and got introduced into the Caribbean in the first thirty years of the new world's conquest. These horses therefore directly descend from the Spanish horses that came from Hispaniola in Cuba along with other close islands as the Spanish colonized New Spain, known as Mexico today.

They really should not be confused with the horses widespread in Spain during its Golden Age because that breed is nearing extinction in Spain and is not bred or preserved. From the 16th century onwards Mexico was conquered and the horses moved north by crossing the Rio Grande. The next century saw these horses being stolen and sold by the Native Indians tribes from this region to the tribes living in the Rocky Mountains as well as the Great Plains.

The horse was considered very small for farming and was replaced by larger and heavier horses. The majority of the new horses were introduced into the populations of the Spanish Mustang in order to crossbreed a heftier and sturdier horse.

The introduction of the Morgans and the thoroughbreds into the feral horses helped crossbreeding efforts. In 1959, the Spanish Mustang Registry Inc. founded by two brothers sought to save the rest of the Spanish Mustang horses.

The horses that acted as the appropriate mares and foundation stallions were two full brothers and crossbreeding began. However, in the year 1944, one of the horses ran wild with its mares and people did not capture it again. It is possible to utilize the Spanish Mustang for many activities for example for Polo, driving, showing, jumping and even dressage.

You can find specific types of Spanish Mustangs that people use in ranches or in performances as stock horses. A number of these horses were cavalry mounts for the U.S. Army while they fought against the Apache Indians. The horses proved their effectiveness in battle for they served well in terrain that was barren.

You can find Spanish Mustangs in a solid range of colors which include brown, bay, black and chestnut along with the unique colors of grullo, buckskin and cremello. They are beautiful horses which have these colors at the base and have white hair or patches on top. All these create different colors like pure white, gray, paint, as well as the dark spots which are similar to those of the Appaloosa breed.

Toys, Toys, Toys!

We have all done it. Gone into the local pet store or wondered down the isle of the big box store to just stand there in amazement. What to get? Will my cat like this or this one? The cat on this box looks so happy and playful! So you begin to load up your shopping cart with "toys", perhaps a cat tunnel and this is addition to the 27 lb container of litter and litter box. All in preparation for the cat you fell in love with that you plan to adopt in a couple of days.

Everything is now bagged at the check out and the cashier tells you the total, "...that will be $298.31." Immediately, you think...what! ok, I don't need that toy or that one and that tall piece of cat furniture can go back...its not even bagged...but I really want "Electric Eenk" to be happy!

STOP! You are doing nothing wrong and it is everything that the first time cat owner experiences. Your heart is in the right place and your new furry companion will probably love every single piece. Remember, he probably has not had the amount of toys you are going to provide and certainly not the amount of patience and love you will lavish upon him. However, let's take a look at what you may want to start with, (toy wise), rather than one of everything in the cat isle.

Yes, you will need a piece of quality cat furniture. The taller and more interesting the piece, the better! Trust me from experience, this is money well spent. Next, take a look at some simple toys, remember your entire home with be a new adventure and you may not want to give your new companion any toys at first. But when you do, try these: orange ping pong balls. These are great because they can be batted around the entire house, (carpet, tile, or wood), and will not get lost under the stove or refrigerator. A crunchy foil toy, (no not one you make out of aluminum foil). These are very cheap and cats love them for the same reason as ping pong balls, but they can carry them in their mouths...you can actually teach your cat to play "fetch". Lastly, a catnip filled "kicker". Cats love them and can be used to "rabbit kick".

Remember, it is not the quantity of "toys" you supply but that you use the toys and interact with your new friend. All too often pet parents think that a basket of toys their furry friend has access to, is enough. Sometimes it is, but they need human contact, just like you!

Six Easy And Useful Ideas To Drive Up Your Horse Sales

Bookmark and Share
By Lee Gilbert

After a great deal of thought you have decided to sell Old Blue. Maybe he is a pony that the kids have outgrown or maybe he just does not suit your riding style anymore. Whatever the reason, here are some ideas to get you started on your horse sales.

The first step when planning to sell your equine friend is to get all of his paperwork in one place, like a file folder or pocket folder. This way, when you have a buyer ready to go, you will not have to waste precious time looking for his registration paperwork or writing up a bill of sale.

Equine's with a large price tag, say over ten thousand US dollars, may benefit from having him seen by a Veterinarian. When determined healthy and sound, that little bit of good news goes a long way to increasing your dollars and will get him out of your barn yard even faster. Choose an equine doctor that has a trustworthy reputation in the industry for more clout.

There are a plethora of equine classified sites on the web that are frequented by pony lovers all all ages, many of which are free or low cost advertising opportunities. Visitors can search in by price range, breeds, training or disciplines and location. See if your local paper has web-based ads that are low-cost or even free.

Probably more than just about any other consideration is your mare's photographs. Good pictures will make your advertising stand out from the crowd and keep it from getting passed over. To make your pony looked well-cared for and therefore more valuable, make sure to groom or bathe him just before the shoot. Recruit a third hand to help out, so you can concentrate on the best angle and utilize a barn wall or some where tidy as your background.

Second only to great portraits is your mount's profile. Stay away from generalizations like bay gelding, which are too vague and describes nearly half the horses for sale today. Listen to your English teacher and use complete sentence structure and avoid abbreviations and slang so as not to confuse your readers. Take a minute to write a few catchy titles and use keywords and phrases to draw potential buyers in. Some ideas for keywords could come from his pedigree, specialized training for particularly favorable attributes like well mannered or hoof sound.

Provide several ways to prospective buyers to get a hold of you including a cell phone number and your email address. Return emails and phone message quickly or you may just loose the sale. Try to make yourself available to answer each incoming call, as how knows, the next person could be just the perfect one.

Honesty and a willingness to barter will go a long way in closing your equine's sale. Remember that the selling price might not be as important than the long term care and well being of your gelding in his new home. Always trust your gut instinct, and if you think the person standing in your stable has ulterior motives, the best bet would be to send him on his way then to take a chance with your old friend.

Feline URI-Upper Respiratory Infection

Bookmark and Share
By Robert Baker

Feline upper respiratory infection (URI) is perhaps the most frustrating illness facing shelter veterinarians, managers and staff. Many cats are chronically infected, vaccines are partially effective at best, and specific treatments are limited. URI is very easily spread by fomites or droplet transmission, and some URI agents are resistant to disinfection.

There are several factors that contribute to URI including overcrowding, stress on the cat, the cleanliness of the environment, the air flow and low quality food. Many of these factors, and they are not a full list, make it nearly impossible to eradicate URI in an environment.

The biggest issues- stress and overcrowding. Sadly, the shelter and cattery situations are never ideal. There is always overcrowding as people turn in pets, the facilities they turn into are not set up for the amount of animals and our intention to not euthanize all create a less than ideal situation.

The worst of all this is that our intention to not euthanize actually causes more deaths as cats contract severe URIs and cannot recover. Kennels and boarding facilities are not immune to breakouts either. During the peak seasons when there are again many pets in a small area the risk is greatly increased.

There are many signs to be on the lookout for a URI. As soon as one is suspected the cat should be removed from the environment. However, the other cats should also be watched as it is rare to only get one cat with a URI in a group setting. Look for the following: Discharge from the nose that can be clear of colored Sneezing and coughing Eyes or the white around the eye that is swollen or red Sores or ulcers on the lips or inside the mouth Loss of appetite or a fever

Find The Best Veterinary Hospital Beaverton

By Maureen Kerr

When it comes to finding a veterinary hospital Beaverton, many people will often opt for the one that is the closest to them. However, this is not always the best way to work. Having an ill pet can be extremely upsetting, especially when many people consider their pets as their children.

There could be many reasons why you are looking for someone who can care for your sick animal but it is always important that they know exactly what they are doing. Experience is essential, especially when it comes to some less well known and possibly confusing illnesses.

The first thing that you should check is the American Animal Hospital Association. This will have a list of all the accredited hospitals that are in your surrounding area. Only those that pass certain tests will be allowed to be placed on the list. This includes constant evaluations of the practice and the people who work there.

Once you have a short list, it is time to look into the details of each place. You could spend a lot of time at the hospital with your pet so it is important that you are able to get along with the vet and the other staff there. You should find that all of your questions are answered and that you find that you can approach them with any of the questions that you have. You should also find that you are given time to make decisions and not pressured or rushed into anything.

You should also consider recommendations about certain places. Try asking your friends and family at first because they may be able to offer some advice. If not, the Internet is your best friend. You should spend time trying to find different websites that run independently from the vets so that you can find honest reviews. You want to know how others' pets were looked after and how diagnoses were made. However, always remember to keep an open mind when looking at all reviews.

When you think you have found a hospital to take your animal, you need to find out whether they can cater for you. If you have a dog, cat and possibly a hamster then you will not find a problem. However, there are many homes that now have rats, spiders and even snakes but not all vets are able to care for them. If you find that the vet you are talking to cannot then ask if he has any recommendations of somewhere that can.

It can take a lot of time to find a veterinary hospital Beaverton that you are happy to take your pet to so you should always looks before you find that you really need one. Vets can cost a lot of money but you will need to find the best for your pet.

Providing Proper Cat Nutrition To Cats Today

Bookmark and Share
By Camille Nguyen

Cat nutrition is essential when keeping every cat healthy. Cats should only be fed cat food, and should never be given dog food to take the place of cat food. Dogs and cats have different nutritional requirements. Giving a cat the proper food and adequate amounts of water can help ensure cats are healthy.

Different cat food brands offer different nutritional aspects. Cats need food with excellent nutritional values. The food regime of a cat should contain more protein, than a dog, and even a human. This is because cats requires roughly 3 times more than humans do, and dogs too. There are concerns over what type of cat food to give a cat. The concerns are over what type of cat food provides more nutrition, canned, wet cat food, or dry. It is recommended when looking at cat food labels, to look for what nutrients the food has, not ingredients.

Cat nutrition takes work, and so does keeping cats coats shining and healthy. Age, too frequent of baths, and weight problems, are a few of the things that can give a negative appearance to the coat of a cat. Premium food is often recommended to cats, for bringing back the shine of the cat. This type of cat food offers fish oils that give a cats coat an extra boost.

Supplements are used for the purpose of deficiencies, or when a cat is sick. On the market there are vitamins and supplements that claim to do a variety of things. Talking with a veterinarian is recommended, as many vitamins and supplements can do more harm than good. Certain vitamins cannot be given in large quantities, or toxicity will come into effect. Onions, garlic, and Calcium, are a couple of supplements that should not be given to cats without the supervision of a professional.

Cat food is measured in kilocalories, which should be monitored. In order to determine the amount of water a cat needs, take the amount of food that is being eaten, then equal the amount of water to it, in milliliters. Canned cat food offers around 80 percent of water, whereas dry cat food offers around 7 percent.

There are many common mistakes that occur when feeding cats. The amount of food a cat eats is just one of the problems. Cats cannot be overfed, overfeeding a cat can have serious side effects. Another misconception is water intake. Cats can easily become dehydrated, so be on the lookout for the symptoms. A few symptoms include panting, and eyes that sink back in the sockets.

Keeping a cat healthy will ensure a long, healthy life for the cat. If one has questions about the amount of water intake or the health of every cat, a professional can give that information and give reassurance. By providing the proper amount of food and water, it will help keep a cat healthy.

What It Takes To Become A Vet San Diego

By Christina Workman

The work of a vet San Diego involves diagnosing and treating injuries, disorders, and diseases that affect animals. The official title for this occupation is either a Veterinary Medicine Doctor or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Some work in development and research, administration, the provision of technical services, the manufacture of veterinary products, or technical writing. Those practicing as doctors care for zoo animals, domestic pets, racehorses, and livestock.

The job also involves vaccinating animals against dangerous diseases such as rabies, distemper, equine flu, cat flu, parvovirus, and many others. Vets dispense medication for illness and infection, dress and treat wounds, perform surgery, and mend broken or fractured bones. They also give owners advice about animal behavior, feeding, and breeding.

For this profession, you need some specific personal qualities and skills. These include a natural aptitude for time management, critical thinking, sound judgment making, and the ability to communicate with all types of people. Your mathematical skills should be good because they will be needed to solve a number of problems.

More importantly, vets should have an innate love and compassion for all animals. They should be able to act effectively in difficult situations, be willing to work irregular hours, and be prepared to respond to emergency call-outs. Many veterinarians start their careers by working as volunteers at animal hospitals, vet clinics, or humane societies. This voluntary work is often a pre-requisite to gain admission to a veterinary college.

A veterinarian has to graduate from an accredited college or university with a Veterinary Medicine Doctor degree (VMD) or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM). Certain doctoral programs do not require students to possess Bachelors degrees to enter, but some do. All vets in the USA have to be licensed.

Admission to veterinary colleges is very competitive. This is because the number of such institutions in the US is limited. Therefore, admissions boards are very selective. Only students who tick all the boxes are considered for admission. Your chances are much better if you already have a Bachelors degree.

When you have graduated as a vet San Diego, you are able to start work. To increase your chances of earning a higher salary, you could embark on a one-year internship. To specialize in any of the 20 veterinary specialty fields and obtain board certification, a further 3 to 4 year residency is necessary.

Using Dog Walkers Chicago Successfully

By Christina Workman

Life is full of activities that can keep pet owners away from home for extended periods of time. This makes it difficult to be sure that your dog gets his recommended exercise on a daily basis. For busy pooch owners dog walkers in Chicago may be the answer to your predicament. You can hire people who will take your pet for walks on whatever frequency you negotiate and for however long you prefer.

Of course they can also provide the required potty break, if the dog must be left for too long a period. Vets all agree that dogs should be walked or in some way exercised on a daily basis. This is especially important if the pet owner lives in an apartment - or any abode with no yard.

Dog walkers can volunteer their services, but will more likely charge a fee for this assistance. Many exercisers will walk more than one dog at a time. This provides the pets with exercise as well as socialization with others. Collars or harnesses are normally required for the safety of all involved.

To find providers of this service, you can search online or seek referrals from friends and neighbors. Vet offices and pet groomers can also be a resource for locating a good walker. If you are already using a kennel or sitting service, they may offer dog walking, too.

In lieu of hiring an unknown, you can also check in your neighborhood for older kids or students who are looking for extra spending money. If they have pets of their own and are comfortable with yours, this could be a great solution for all. But for a reputable and reliable experience, an established business is still the way to go.

In some areas licensing is required, as is some sort of training. Emergency care for canines or education to recognize neglect or abuse can be an advantage in assisting pets in trouble. Of course being a pet lover is normally a requirement.

Larger companies offering this service have benefits, too. They are normally insured against injuries or complaints of any kind, and this can provide more peace of mind. Plus, it's always refreshing to deal with an organized company instead of an individual who may forget you when better plans come his way.

Dog walkers in Chicago can be a lifesaver for your pet, when obstacles keep you from providing them with the interaction and exercise they need. Hiring a reliable service provider is paramount to this being a successful endeavor for all involved.

Key Concepts For Effective Pet Training

Bookmark and Share
By Adriana Noton

When working with a new dog or puppy, making behavioral changes takes plenty of time and patience. Effective pet training does not happen overnight. Success depends on spending adequate time with your dog on a consistent basis and applying good technique for helping him learn.

No two dogs are the same. Their actions and ability to train depend on breed, temperament, and nature. Certain dogs tend to be very eager to please and engaged with their owners while others hold back and respond more mildly. For rewards, some like food and treats while others respond to praise. Some pets work better with verbal commands versus hand signals. By spending plenty of time observing behavior and reaction, you can determine what works best in your situation.

It is important to establish yourself as the pack leader or authority in your home. In a natural environment, dogs look to the pack leader for guidance and direction. It is a position of dominance, but should not be established by negative means. Speak with authoritative tones. Since you are in charge of the food supply, this is a good way to show you are in charge. Set a regular schedule of feeding and stick to it.

Positive reinforcement is more effective than negative. The key to reinforcing a certain behavior is to recognize when dogs perform correct tasks by rewarding them generously. When a dog does something bad, avoid reacting negatively by yelling or punishing. Instead, simply ignore the unwanted behavior. This helps teach what behaviors earn praise versus what results in nothing.

Punishment and negativity are not effective as a training method. You should never beat or strike an animal in anger. This only has the effect of alienating dogs. It causes them to consider you an adversary. Using rewards a dog likes along with positive reinforcement is more successful while also creating a strong bond between you and your dog.

Be realistic about the goals an individual dog can achieve and the timing involved. It may take longer than you originally expected. If you set an unrealistic goal, such as expecting him to learn how to roll over in one day, you will both become frustrated. Start with a small goal, like learning the sit or down commands, so that you can see what works best. Then utilize these methods for a more advanced command.

Consider the importance of timing when rewarding or correcting behavior. Your action must be a direct result of what the dog has done. Scolding after the fact has little effect other than cause confusion. For example, suppose you return home and find a sofa cushion has been chewed. Becoming angry and scolding your pet will not work because the bad behavior happened much earlier. Although dogs will naturally cower and slink away, they are simply responding to your negative language. Dogs are not able to connect their earlier actions with your belated reaction.

Consistency and patience are two of the most important aspects for effective dog training London Ontario. Use the exact same verbal and hand signals every time. Set a regular schedule to train. This can be a set time each day, or several small periods of time during the day. All these concepts come together to create an effective program to help your dog learn proper behavior.

Pet Training Can Be Very Helpful

Bookmark and Share
By Adriana Noton

All pets need to have rules. It does not matter what kind of pet that you have. This will help them gain your trust also. Tricks being taught and teaching showing techniques are not what basic pet training is all about. There are other things that the animal needs to know first.

Everybody knows of a dog that jumps all over them. This is because of them not receiving the training that they should be taught. Training your pet is not about controlling everything that they do but it is about showing them what they can and cannot do. It is important for them to know their boundaries also.

Before anything can be taught to an animal, it will need to know its name. They cannot respond when they do not know that you are talking to them. You need some sort of communication and it needs to be taught before you teach anything else.

If the animal is not house broken, this is very important if it is going to be living in the house with you. They need to know where they should go to the bathroom. They also should stay out of the garbage. You also do not want them getting food off of the counters.

An animal should never be allowed to do something that is not going to be allowed later on. It is hard to stop them from doing something once they have been allowed to do it. They should be scolded every time instead of letting them do it once and not another time. This will confuse them.

Use a command that is the same every time. Everybody should use the same command also. Do not change it because they will not know what is being told to them. Animals only understand what they are taught. Words can be associated with things. We may not realize it but an animal will. They get food when somebody says food, eat, or feed. If somebody says out or outside, they will get to go outside. Riding in a vehicle is associated with bye bye. Your pets are taught these things without trying.

A lot of people say that an older dog has already set its ways. They do not try to train them. Any animal can be taught what you expect of them. Some are just harder to teach than others. They seem to learn what they can get away with faster than they learn to stop doing it.

Horses, dogs and other animals will have a stronger bond with you when you train them. It does take patience though. This is because some animals will learn things quicker than others. Others may know what you want them to do but they refuse. There are things that you can get to help out with this type of behavior. If you are unsuccessful in dog training London Ontario your animal, there are places that you can take them to be trained.

The Advantages of Horse Whispering

Bookmark and Share
By Annabelle Cabella

Do you ever think of how do whisperers do what they do? Here are some of the essentials of horse whispering.

Possibly one of the most humane ways of training your equine is through horse whispering. Technically, every natural horseman can be considered as a horse whisperer because they try to understand the "real" language and psychology of the equine.

You don't require any particular tool for horse whispering. With just a round pen and a rope, you can start "whispering" to your horse. However, it should be mentioned that before ever attempting to learn and attempt horse whispering, you should fully understand equine psychology.

If you already know horse psychology, then you should know that horses are prey animals and they have very strong flight responses when faced with seemingly threatening things and occurrences. Their natural response to your unfamiliar presence is to run away but chasing them may be a good idea. Certainly, you won't be able to outchase the horse, but the experience will ultimatel make the horse warm up to you.

The equine will still be aware of what you are trying to do even when it is exhausted. The act of "horse whispering' is done at this point. You stand by the horse's side and steady yourself. From the outside, you appear like you are whispering to the horse, thus the name. This is actually putting the horse in its comfort zone as you're merely reenacting the behavior of the mare in the herd.

Horses are easily scared and have a very flighty response. But they can also lose interest just as easily. They will easily ignore you if you're lacking in confidence. It is important that you are confident in your approach so the equine can sense that you're a presence to be considered.

Be direct in your attempts but be careful as well. Your equine may handle things differently from other horses. It is up to you to determine the right approach.

Getting the animal's trust is one thing but it is not enough as you need to display your dominance and leadership. The success of your horse training endeavor depends on it. Turning your back to your horse is also an intricate aspect of horse whispering. Turning your back to the horse is simply implying to the horse that you are its leader and should be followed. Turn and step away slowly as you try to see if the animal is indeed following you. Don't expect to get it the first time. You will need a few more tries to perfect this method.

A good horse whisperer values technique, practice and is always patient with his horse. Try to be sensitive as much as possible because horse whispering depends on two important things-knowledge and intuition.

The unhealthy food we eat in excess, such as treated sugars, are perpetrators in depleting us of some minerals and vitamins. For example, a surplus of sugar in the system can end up in a depletion of zinc, chromium, magnesium and folic acid. Also, a large individual who is exercising frequently and eating less than normal may need vitamin and mineral reinforcement. Many Jamaicans do not meet their nutritive needs through consumption alone. Vitamine

Additions are meant to be an addition to typical diet and not to replace needed food. When unsure about our body's nutritional deficiencies, it is safe not to help outside the nutrient elements found in a high-quality multiple vitamin / mineral supplement. This is particularly relevant for the mineral iron which is probably dangerous when oversupplied. It's a good idea to make checks with a therapist o pharmacist before bolstering.

Vitamine

Trace elements Trace elements are needed in minute quantities, but make a contribution to health in an enormous way. Chromium, copper, iron, selenium and zinc are examples. Chromium increases the cells ' sensitiveness to insulin which helps to regulate blood sugar and augment heat production for weight loss. Chromium helps to build lean tissue, and heavy exercise and injury increase the body's requirement for it and possibly lead to a shortage. Chromium is typically available in the shape of chromium picolinate supplement. A regular dosage of 50 to 400 micrograms is endorsed for reinforcement.

Vitamine

Calcium Calcium is the commonest mineral in the body, and most of it is carried in the bones. It is important for heart and nerve function, muscle tone and contraction. Dieting can shift the quantity of calcium soaked up from food, exhausting the body's supply. For adult dieters, 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily is counseled. Remember that vitamin C and vitamin D improve its assimilation.

Vitamine

Some recent studies with calcium show some promise for weightloss ; diets loaded in calcium may help break down fat and result in weight reduction. Calcium may do this by binding to fat in the gut and carrying it out of the body. Nonetheless other studies contradict these findings, so we wait for yet more studies.

Your Dog Don't Even Have To Go Through Complication Skin - Atopica Might Be A Cure

One of the most common uncomfortable conditions that are inflicted upon man's best friend is dermatitis. Technically speaking, it is an inflammatory, chronically relapsing, non-contagious and extremely annoying skin disorders. Also known as Prurigo Besnier, Flexural Eczema or Endogenous Eczema, it is one among the most annoying conditions that can be contracted on some cases of canines.

This condition is also named Prurigo Besnier, Neuro Dermatitis, Flexual Eczema and Endogenous Eczema. This is usually caused by allergies. Radiation and histamines can also cause this skin disorder. Histamines are always part of the immune responses.

Contrary to exterior source of irritation, sometimes a dog may be biologically inclined to contracting dermatitis. Other times, simple hygiene is at the root of the cause. A warm, soapy bath may be an easy solution, ridding the animal of any irritants like fleas or histamines contained in dirt or pollen from the outdoors. On the other hand, if this does nothing to ease the problem, then it is advisable to take a trip to your animal's Veterinarian.

Usually dogs that are either six months to three years of age contract this type of dermatitis. The condition will usually be characterized by the animal's constant chewing in the stomach, groin and leg areas. He may spend hours grooming himself. Patches of exposed skin on the stomach or groin may turn into dull brown spots of color, meaning that it has been exposed to a lot of the dog's saliva in its frantic attempts to relieve the itching. Also, his ears may be hot and visibly red, warm to the touch of human fingers, almost like a fever.

Veterinary Pet Insurance, which functions as the nation's top health care provider for pets, has reported that one of the major three reasons that dogs are brought to a veterinary clinic in the first place is because of skin problems. For this reason, there exist a variety of treatments that are available to treat dermatitis in its every form.

Treatments include shots, steroids, antibiotics and anti-fungal medications. Your dog may be administered with a shot or tablet of Cortisone. This is more often than not a temporary solution to the problem. Prednisone tablets or Desensitization techniques (allergy shots) are also available. Anti-Histamines are another type of treatment that is often optioned. These include medications like Atarax, Benadryl, Tavist and Chlor-Tremeton. Also, Omega Fatty Acids boost the body's immune system naturally and deflect allergens on the surface of our skin.

The most common drug used to treat dermatitis is called ivermectin. It functions as an immunosuppressant drug and is often used in post-allergenic transplantation of organs to reduce the activity of a human immune system and thereby lower the chance of going through an organ rejection. In dogs, lowering the activity of an immune system lowers its response to skin irritants and eases the sensation of hotness and itchiness.

Warnings To Follow When Housetraining Puppies

Bookmark and Share

Deciding to get a family pet involves many different decisions. A cat, a dog, a bird or a fish? When you choose a dog, you need to learn the ropes of housetraining puppies if you are intending on keeping the dog indoors. The first thing to understand is that dogs do not know that your favorite rug is not a good place to relieve themselves.

When you begin this process, you might as well realize that there will be accidents regardless of how much effort you put into it. If you are distracted only for a second and miss the warning signs, an accident is very likely during the training process. It is important that you learn how the dog acts when they are feeling that urge in order to make sure you catch it in time.

A schedule is absolutely critical to success of this project. Taking the pup outdoors at specific times and staying their until they have accomplished the task is key. You will need to take them to the designated spot immediately after they wake up as well as immediately after feeding them. As the pup learns the schedule they will begin to expect these things to take place.

When you notice that your dog is showing the signs of needing to relieve themselves, pick them up and carry them outside. Doing so will cut down on the chances that there will be an accident on the way out the door. They need to learn bladder control as well as self control, so patience is a must.

Nighttime is the hardest for making sure there are no accidents. However, confining the dog to a specific area for sleeping will help reduce any accidents. They do not like to sleep where they relieve themselves, so they will usually not do so. You will want to consider an option for relieving themselves in the night such as a potty training pad or a litter box.

To reinforce the behavior that you desire, be sure to reward them each time they are successful outdoors. A treat and praise will reinforce the behavior. Be sure to provide the reward immediately after completion so that the dog associates the treat with the behavior. If you wait too long they will not realize they are being rewarded for relieving outdoors instead of indoors.

Compare your pup to your children to help you realize that your children also required quite a bit of work to get them to use the toilet. A pup and a child have the same thoughts when they are born. They do not know that there is a proper time and place for relieving themselves. Babies wear diapers for the first year or so of their lives.

Beginner's Guide To Keeping Chickens

Bookmark and Share
By Mario Leal

Gardening can be a good first step to be self sufficient. The next logical step concerns a consistent source of protein. Sure, you can try cultivating soy beans and live a vegan lifestyle, but why not try keeping chickens? Chickens are a great choice because they give choices. Maybe you only want chickens for meat or for eggs. This article will concentrate on presenting information to help you begin wondering about keeping chickens.

Chickens are part of the genus Gallus and that is the Latin word for rooster. Keeping chickens is enjoyable. Families enjoy the meat and eggs chickens can provide. There are plenty of varieties of chickens. Because of so many choices, people have a great opportunity to have chickens that fit their tastes--literally. Also, keeping chickens is educational for everyone.

The costs associated with raising chickens can vary. All chickens have to be housed in something. Housing is necessary. But, they do not need anything super extravagant. Fencing in the chickens is a must because they can get into your garden. Your desired breed might be hard to find in your area which could increase their expenses. All of those costs can vary considerably.

Many people are allergic to chickens. Friends and family must be checked to find out if they are allergic. You want to learn as early as possible. The best way to check is to pay a visit to some chickens. Chickens can be viewed at zoos or poultry shows. There are also others in the area who keep chickens. If you make certain you or your family is not allergic, you will save a lot of money.

While few, there are some downsides related to keeping chickens. Chickens can generate plenty of droppings. Management of these droppings is super crucial since they can start to smell and attract flies. The favorite activity of any chicken is always to scratch. Make sure you don't have them anywhere near new plants and fragile plantings. Chickens really need an area by themselves. Because of their scratching and other activities, chickens stir up dirt which could prove unpleasant when they are residing in an outbuilding with equipment or other items.

Your neighbors really should play a substantial part of your planning where you can keep your chickens. Hens make noises, but not like roosters. Roosters produce a lot of noises. Roosters crow at dawn. But, in addition they crow at evening and when they need to alert the flock. A flock consisting of hens only will solve the noise problems. Hen only flocks are fine. Fertilizing eggs is the primary job of roosters. Roosters let you hatch chicks. Without one, you will have to settle for eggs and meat.

There is a ton of various kinds of breeds. Before you pick one, you should know what your chickens will supply to you. Do not stress. This choice doesn't need to be a difficult decision. Your flock can provide meat, eggs, or both, but you ought to know before you start your flock. There are actually breeds that happen to be best for eggs or meat. You could look at a hybrid breed. Hybrids aren't particularly great at both. Lots of people keep two flocks. One flock for eggs and one flock for meat. Isn't it good to have choices?

All hens will lay eggs. Nevertheless, several breeds lay far more and greater eggs than other people. You anticipate 20 dozen eggs per year from the very best of hens. Chicken breeds which produce eggs best are called layers. The best producers or layers are smaller and produce white-shelled eggs. There are also brown-shelled layers. Brown-shelled layers tend to be calmer and simpler to keep. Kinds of these breeds are Minorca, Ancona, and Leghorn.

Meat breeds are not as small as egg breeds. This is because egg breeds spend all their time on egg production. It's hard to decide when to slaughter your chickens. Meat classes help you with this decision. The classes are: Cornish Hen, Broiler, Roaster. The Cornish Hen will be the youngest in the three. Roasters are the oldest. When taking into consideration the age or which class one chicken needs to be in, be sure you keep the feeding costs in mind. As those costs increase, your price per pound also increases. Keeping chickens involves planning before you even begin. Fantastic meat breeds feature Australorp, Orpington, and Cornish.

Hybrid breeds don't really do either job very well. Even so, you will find some very good cross breeds. Don't anticipate your hybrid breed to produce as many eggs. Also, it will take longer to get them to the body weight you desire for butchering. Be sure to monitor your feeding costs. Also, if you decide to use a cross breed, you will not have the ability to raise your own chicks. You will have to become a steady customer with a hatchery. The top examples of this breed are Wyandottes, New Hamshire, Plymouth Rock.

Pullets, young chickens, begin laying around 20 weeks old. Hens lay one egg every four days and are small. Whenever a hen gets 30 weeks old, she's going to begin laying 2 eggs every three days and the eggs will be a normal size. The poor performers of the group should become candidates for slaughter. This will ensure your flock is running effectively and costs are kept within bounds.

Keep close track of the body weight for the meet breeds and remember the meat class you are using. When butchering time arrives, you will need to prepare yourself for butchering. You can find excellent resources for doing this, but mostly practice can make you a master. If you do not find doing all of your own butchering interesting, you might be able to find a local butcher. In either case, you'll have one of the better meals you have ever had.
