Training your dog is not a quick process, but it doesn't have to be a difficult one. Any dog can be trained, and any dog owner can learn to train their dog. Follow the advice in this article for some ways to make the process easier, faster, and more effective.

A very important command that any dog should know is 'stay'. Not only can this command stop him from doing something dangerous like running into the street, it can calm him down in a strange place. Firstly, tell him to 'sit'. Hold him in the sitting position, repeating the word 'stay'. Praise him with a treat, all the time ensuring that he stays seated.

You shouldn't wait for bad behaviors to start to begin preemptively addressing them. Most new dog owners can expect at least one bad behavior to crop up during their time as a dog owner! Start addressing inappropriate soiling, destructive chewing and separation anxiety as if they're likely to happen, and make sure your environment makes those things hard to occur!

Research to find out if your training path fits your dog's specific breed. Certain breeds have a tough time with retaining new things quickly or are very stubborn, and may need more time. There are several dog breeds that need your patience when training, and basset hounds and bulldogs are just two such breeds.

The "watch" command is extremely useful and should be taught to your dog early. The process is simple: hold a treat between your eyes and use the command. When the dog gets this idea, start moving your hand parallel to your face. Naturally, your dogs eyes should follow the treat. The moment he looks back at you, as if to say, "Aren't you going to give me that?" reward him. Pretty soon, he'll learn that looking you in the eyes is the best way to get what he wants. This technique is valuable for helping your dog to focus on you during distracting situations.

It is of utmost importance that you portray yourself as a calm and confident leader when you are training your dog. Dogs are pack animals, and they only feel secure and willing to obey and submit when they trust that you are a capable leader of the pack. When your dog looks up to you as the leader, it will be eager to please you and it will obey your commands.

Dog training requires equal parts of patience, love, and dog treats. The tips we've gone over will set you and your new pup onto the path of a loving wonderful relationship for the years to come. It won't happen overnight, but by being consistent in your training, you will create a much happier home for both of you.
