Basic Dog Training - Teaching A Dog To Come To You When Called

Teaching the dog to come when called is one of the earliest basic dog training skills that most people want to master with their new dog. This is a very important command for any dog owner to master.

More likely to stay out of trouble is an obedient dog who comes when called by his or her owner. You can prevent her from getting into fights with other dogs, frightening children, getting dirty in situation where you do not want that, and you can often keep her off the road and out of danger simply by calling her to you at the right moment.

A simple thing to teach your dog would be this basic dog training skill. But there are reasons why dogs don't want to leave whatever they find interesting just to come to you when you call. When dogs walk around, they come across fascinating scents and they love to explore and check them all out.

Instead of only when your dog has nothing better to do, set up some kind of reward in order to teach your dog to come every time. Common to all basic dog training techniques is rewarding dogs for the right behavior.

You can use the main types of reward with dogs such as praise or other forms of positive attention as well as treats. In order for your puppy to understand the connection between coming to you when called and getting a treat, minimize distractions when you start out with basic dog training.

In order for your dog to learn fast about these two events not happening together by chance, it's better if you have fewer distractions. Training your dog in a one-on-one situation when nobody else is around would be the best option. Giving your dog praises and a treat is how you can start out.

When she understands that 'Come' or 'Come here' means she should come to you, you can move the training to outside. Putting your dog on a long leash may be useful. This will stop her going so far away that she cannot hear you clearly.

Once your dog thoroughly learned the skill, you can stop giving him or her treats. But never stop giving the praise. Even when she is 20 years old you should still praise her for coming to you when she is called.

The rewards should only be given when your dog comes to you when they're called and not for coming to you at other times. You have to be the one who is in charge.

Remember that a dog does not have a long attention span for most things. The lessons need to be short so that the dog does not become bored or frustrated.

You need to watch the tone of your voice. When people try to train dogs, they have a habit of speaking in a stern or serious voice. The dog may think that you're angry before you even start, and this is not great. Your dog will be stressed from the training. When you're starting with basic dog training, use your normal voice most of the time.
